Forge Folk Notes
Forge Folk Notes is where we share the quieter side of life at The Old Forge.
Small stories from the seasons, thoughts between arrivals, and the simple things that make time slow a little here.
It’s for those who stay with us, those who plan to, and those who simply like the idea of switching off. Notes on country life, local places we love, evenings under dark skies, and the kind of moments that don’t need much explaining.

From Flour to Loaf — Our Sourdough Day with Martin Judd
There is something deeply satisfying about making your own bread — the slow, patient, living kind that takes time and a little faith. Here at The Old Forge we are always looking for ways to be more self-sufficient and connected to what we eat, and sourdough felt like a natural next step. It hasn't always been straightforward, but when it works, there is nothing quite like pulling a warm loaf out of the AGA on a Sunday morning.
Spring at The Old Forge — Cowslips, Butterflies and Wild Garlic Pesto
The cowslips are out, the lambs are in the fields, and the hills smell of wild garlic and warm grass. Spring has properly arrived at The Old Forge.
Rainy Days… What to do?
Rain stops play? Not here it doesn't. We're in Dorset — we're well used to the odd grey day, and over the years we've got rather good at making the most of them. From pottering around in Sophie's ceramics café to tank museums, luxury spas and proper old-fashioned board games by the fire, there's no shortage of ways to fill a rainy day. So put the kettle on, watch the clouds roll in over the downs, and take your pick.

Tim helps us see what the night hides in plain sight: the delicate beauty of these misunderstood visitors
