The Old Forge, a unique and special B&B in Dorset
Sam the Shepherds Hut
As featured on the hit series Holiday Home Sweet Home, view video on our homepage
Cast your eyes across the buttercups and you will find Sam the Shepherd’s Hut sitting comfortably in the meadow. Sam is the latest addition to the unique range of accommodation at The Old Forge. Purchased from retired Dorset Shepherd Larry Skeats, Sam has been restored to his former glory and comes complete with a Shepherd’s crook!
The stresses of modern day life are a distant memory here as you gaze across to the scarp slopes of Melbury and Fontmell Down. A pretty, rose patterned quilt and luxurious sheepskin drape the comfortable 4 by 6 foot bed, which makes the most of the triple aspect views. Enjoy the dawn chorus whilst you boil the kettle on the stove to make your morning tea. Sam is well equipped for your arrival with water, stored in a vintage enamel container, tea and coffee and home made biscuits. You also have access to your own shed which has a fridge and freezer so you can enjoy a few evening BBQs.
A clever addition to this authentic hut is the veranda where you can enjoy a glass of wine and the barbecue whilst getting to know your neighbours Scrumpy Jack, Lily and the chickens!
Evening entertainment is by candlelight. You can choose to toast chestnuts on the ‘pipsqueak’ wood burner, reach for the vintage scrabble set, or gaze at the night sky as you have never seen it before.
The bathroom is just a short hop and a skip across the meandering paved path into a converted outbuilding. An antique commode-come-composting loo, a salvaged suite complete with electric shower, sink and a heated towel rail all combine to make a very comfortable convenience. Please ensure that you inform us what time you will be arriving so we can light the wood burner prior to your arrival!
The Shepherds Hut and the Gypsy Caravan are both situated in the same field, they are ideal for two couples or friends wanting to holiday together. BBQs can be done by Sam or Rosie.
Tip toe across the stepping stones to the Tuck Shop if you are feeling peckish and weigh out a quarter of Rhubarb and Custard! Jam jars filled with Lucy's homemade marmalade and hedgerow preserves, there is a tiny sink for your washing up and a fridge to store your goodies. Open up the cupboards and you will find picnic plates, glasses, and barbecue fuel.
Sam, the shepherd's hut (and Rosie, the Gypsy caravan) are also handled by Sawday's Canopy "&" Stars. Just click on the logo on the pages.
